Foton Gran General G7

As the year-end approaches, Foton has launched the Grand General G7. A pickup with a硬朗 design, it features a large polygonal front grille with integrated logo, vertical fog lamp areas, smoked full-LED headlights, and sleek side lines with sporty side steps for style and accessibility. The interior adopts a German SUV-style through-type cockpit design, with leather steering wheel and imitation leather seats; the driver's seat offers front/rear and height adjustment, which is user-friendly. Powered by a 2.0T diesel engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, it delivers 163Ps and 390N·m. While its looks are impressive, the overall cost-effectiveness is slightly lacking, and there's room for improvement in overall performance.

I'm most satisfied with the Foton Grand General G7's imposing appearance, over 1.8m height, 5.3m length, blacked-out wheels, and muscular lines, resembling a Ford Raptor. Its interior is well-equipped with electronic parking brake, shift paddles, 4WD system, and a large infotainment screen. The 2.0T diesel engine delivers 120KW and 390N·m, providing ample power and driving fun with shift paddles. However, the diesel engine is noisier than gasoline ones, which is a downside for quiet long road trips. Also, the 5.3m length makes it less maneuverable in city traffic and congestion.

We test-drove the 2022 Foton Grand General G7 2.0T Diesel Automatic 4WD Enjoy Standard Cab. Its exterior is as imposing as the Raptor. The interior prioritizes luxury and comfort, a Chinese automaker strength for pickups. The diesel engine performs smoothly without harshness or typical vibration, offering strong mid-low speed acceleration but weaker high-end power, normal for diesel's high torque and low power. The chassis balances well, closer to a family SUV than a生硬 pickup, with excellent approach, departure, and breakover angles for superior off-road capability. NVH is comparable to same-priced SUVs. Overall, it's ideal for fishing and camping.
