Is the BYD Yuan UP worth buying?

Vehicle Highlights
-
Spacious interior: Ample space in both the front and rear rows.
-
Powerful performance: Boasts a maximum speed of 150 km/h and a maximum torque of 180 N·m.
-
Convenient operation: Equipped with features such as reverse camera, automatic parking, and power-adjustable seats.

It is recommended to choose a high-range version as much as possible. Some car owners have reported that the 301 km range is insufficient for their daily use.
Basic Information
The Yuan UP is one of the key models under BYD's Dynasty Series and also one of the brand's most internationally renowned models. Currently, it has achieved localized production in multiple regions, including Brazil, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
In August 2025, the Yuan UP recorded a monthly sales volume of 19,647 units, with a 58% month-on-month growth—setting a new high for the year—and ranked 11th in the passenger car sales ranking of that month. This achievement is mainly attributed to the new low-priced model launched at the end of July; its starting price of approximately 10,000 US dollars has lowered the purchase threshold.
This model offers two range options: 301 km and 401 km, which are precisely positioned to meet the daily commuting needs of young urban users.

Competitor Comparison
I select four competing models in the same price range. A comparison shows that the BYD Yuan UP has significant advantages in terms of space, power, and comfort. In other aspects, it also maintains a level close to that of its peers in the same class. It can be said to be a model with clear strengths and no obvious shortcomings.
The following is a detailed comparison of its key capabilities:
-
Range Capability: With a CLTC range of 301 km, it is similar to competitors in the same price range—neither a disadvantage nor an advantage.
-
Space Size: The BYD Yuan UP has a length of 4.3 meters and a trunk capacity of 1,320 liters, giving it a distinct advantage over models in the same class. As an SUV, sufficient space is a crucial factor for evaluation.
-
Power Performance: It delivers strong power performance, opening a significant gap with its peers. Its maximum power can reach 70 kW, maximum torque 108 N·m, and its top speed (up to 150 km/h) is also much higher than that of competing models.
-
Battery Capability: Its 32 kWh battery capacity is comparable to that of same-class models. With a 100km power consumption of 12 kWh, it still maintains low energy consumption similar to competitors despite its strong power performance. In summary, this is also a core advantage of the BYD Yuan UP.
-
Operational Convenience: It comes standard with features such as a reverse camera, automatic parking, and power-adjustable seats. Its driving experience is also an advantage when compared with models in the same class.

Positive Reviews
Spacious Interior
-
"Among compact cars, this vehicle offers quite excellent interior space, especially headroom. When I sit in it and adjust the seat to the lowest position, there is still over a fist's length of headroom left. When I’m in the driver’s seat (with the seat adjusted to my usual driving position), the space in the second row is still decent, and the space utilization is good. However, the seat cushion is a bit short, so part of my thigh is slightly suspended."
-
"The exterior looks not very big, but the interior space is quite large—taking a family of five out is no problem at all. The second row is equipped with air vents, and the floor tunnel is fully flat. It’s really good. This is also the largest compact electric car in its price range."
-
"There is absolutely no problem with 3 people sitting in the second row. You can also fold the seats flat to store more items. The distance between the second row and the front seat is about two and a half fists, so the space is more than enough, and the visibility is good too."
Sufficient Power
-
"In terms of power, it’s more than enough for daily commuting. The acceleration is quick, and the chassis vibration filtering effect is much better than expected. Generally speaking, I’m quite satisfied with it overall."
-
"The power is full, and it accelerates very quickly. However, its range performance is a bit weak—probably because I often drive at high speeds."
Easy to Handle
-
"The handling is relatively light; it’s not particularly premium in terms of feel, but it’s suitable for family use. However, aggressive driving is not recommended."
-
"It’s much easier to drive than the Toyota Corolla 1.6. The steering is light, but the brakes are too soft. Every time, I have to start breaking a certain distance in advance."
Negative Reviews
Insufficient Range
-
"On a full charge, it can run about 230 km in the city, but only 150-160 km on highways."
-
"The range performance is not very ideal; basically, it needs to be recharged after driving 250 km."
-
"In summer, with the air conditioner on, if the vehicle speed is 100 km/h, the actual range is only 75% of the rated range; if the speed is 110 km/h, the actual range drops to 68% of the rated range."
Loud Noise
-
"Road noise and wind noise are slightly loud, especially on concrete roads with many cracks—road noise is quite noticeable. When driving on highways at speeds above 80 km/h, wind noise becomes quite loud too."
